Frequently Asked Questions

What is Morse code?β–Ό

Morse code is a communication system developed by Samuel Morse and Alfred Vail in the 1830s–40s for use with the electric telegraph. It represents letters and numbers as sequences of short signals (dots) and long signals (dashes). A dash is 3Γ— the duration of a dot. Spaces between letters and between words allow decoding. It was the dominant long-distance communication method from the 1840s until the late 20th century, and is still used in aviation and amateur radio.

What does SOS look like in Morse code?β–Ό

SOS is '... --- ...' β€” three dots, three dashes, three dots. It was chosen as the international distress signal in 1906 specifically because it's easy to remember and easy to send, not because it stands for 'Save Our Ship' (that was a backronym added later). It can be sent by any means: sound, light flashes, taps, or radio.
