Frequently Asked Questions
What annual return should I use?▼
The US stock market has historically returned about 10% annually before inflation (7% after inflation). A conservative estimate for a mixed portfolio is 5–6%. For a 100% stock portfolio, 7–8% is a common planning assumption.
What is the 4% rule?▼
The 4% rule (Bengen Rule) states that you can withdraw 4% of your portfolio in year one of retirement, then adjust for inflation each year, and have a very high probability of not running out of money over a 30-year retirement.
How much do I need to retire?▼
A common rule of thumb is 25× your annual retirement expenses (the inverse of the 4% rule). If you need $60,000/year, aim for $1.5 million. This assumes a 30-year retirement and a balanced portfolio.
What counts as retirement savings?▼
Include 401(k), 403(b), IRA, Roth IRA, and other retirement accounts. Don't include your home equity or Social Security in this calculator — those are separate income sources.
